Tip: Community advisory boards 101
Mar 24, · An advisory board has to be appointed before it can be elected. It can’t be too big because nothing will ever get done, but it is also responsible for being transparent and listening to the community it represents. Our first step will be to create a steering committee comprising Azure Data Community members from all over the world. A community advisory board (CAB) can be an essential resource for your equity- focused quality improvement efforts. The participants, who are recruited from the same.
For those of us who have been involved in the Microsoft Data Platform community for a few years, the events of the last few months have been dramatic, culminating in the end of the Professional Association for SQL Server PASSwhich closed down in January As I wrote previously, this left local user groups having to fend for themselves.
Local groups are where the most passionate members of our SQLFamily are found. We love to how to change volume id our knowledge, and many of us have travelled across our respective countries — sometimes even across the world — to do so.
Microsoft recognized this. With PASS claiming membership numbers exceeding , it was evident that any effort to resurrect a community from the wreckage would require serious muscle. Microsoft recognized this too.
It was therefore a welcome sight when they created a new Azure Data Community initiativemaking use of the existing third-party platform Meetup. This was the fastest way they could show support at the local group level.
In a few short weeks it brought together over user groups in 30 countries, representing more than 52, people. This is no small feat, especially considering the timelines.
Even before PASS, people were meeting to share their knowledge and passion. Over the last few years, groups broke away from PASS for a number of reasons. Secondly, a central organization cannot dictate membership terms without offering something tangible in return, and with reduced revenue impacting financial support for local groups, there was no incentive.
With that all said, what has been evident — especially over the last year — is how well we can work together as a loose collection of independent groups even while PASS struggled to survive. And so, despite how we might feel about the way PASS did things, there are tens of thousands of people who want to learn about the many technologies in the Azure Data sphere, and it needs a home base but not necessarily an owner.
Beyond licenses for Meetup. Last week it was announced that I and several other people in various geographical regions have been appointed to the Azure Data Community Advisory Board.
At this early stage you can think of us as a community foundation. Yes, Microsoft put it together, but the important thing is that we answer to you.
We answer to the Azure Data community. But we have to start somewhere. An advisory board has to what is a community advisory board appointed before it can be elected. Our first step will be to create a steering committee comprising Azure Data How to get a resale number in ca members from all over the world.
Together with the steering committee we will put in place communication channels between Microsoft and the local groups to formalize the current arrangement. Currently there are just three people at Microsoft doing a lot of work, so it will be good to share the effort amongst all of us, and to make sure they are the right efforts. We also plan to implement continuity so that other community leaders will come in to take our place after a fixed term. First Meetup, then Teams. As Rie Merritt writes in the announcement:.
These folks will be among the first people and groups onboarded to the Community Teams Tenant. They will how long does a company have to keep financial records pairing up with other groups to help them onboard and to speed up the roll out, just as other user groups will be asked to do the same. This is a community driven effort. And Microsoft is listening.
Make sure you reach out to them with ideas, especially if you are a local Community Group leader. We will be holding an Azure Data Community group leaders meeting soon on the Teams channel to discuss community and share best practices with each other. Thank you to everyone for the support that put me in this position, to allow me to speak on behalf of the Azure Data community in Canada and elsewhere. Your email address will not be published. An advisory board is a supplement to this main board. It may have an actual board member or two on it, but it is mostly composed of people with expertise in a given area who are not on the main board. If the word “board” in the title is confusing, you can think of this as a “committee” instead. Community Advisory Boards (CABs) build and foster partnerships between researchers and local study communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. An active CAB with a committed membership is an integral part in the effort to combat AIDS. The board shall advise the governing body of the station with respect to whether the programming and other policies of the station are meeting the specialized educational and cultural needs of the communities served by the station, and may make such recommendations as it considers appropriate to meet such needs.
An Advisory Board is a structured and collaborative method for organisations to engage with external advisors. Advisory Boards act as a sounding-board for either the owners, directors or shareholders of a company. Advisory Boards are useful in both scaling businesses as well as larger entities like emerging corporates, multi-nationals, non-profits, academia and government. A well structured Advisory Board with best practice principles allows people in the organization to test their own strategic thinking and access expertise or connections that may not be readily available via other means.
The purpose of most Advisory Boards is to help the organization gain new insights and advice to solve business problems or explore new opportunities by stimulating robust, high-quality conversations. The role of an Advisory Board is not to make decisions, but rather provide current knowledge, critical thinking and analysis to increase the confidence of the decision makers who represent the company. Advisory Boards can be known by many different names such as advisory panels, steering committees, panels, think tanks or board of advice.
An Advisory Board is different to a governance board or board of directors. Due to the flexible nature of Advisory Boards, the scope, or terms of reference, and Advisor roles are chosen to fit the business requirements. Larger organisations or corporates may have additional Advisory Board members. Careful consideration should be given to the overall size and scope of the Advisory Board to support focus, efficient operation and impact measurement.
